Since recently I dabble in acting as a lead-talker in English conversation practice in two courses at the community university Tainan. But what do I mean by that? Well that is easy to explain: Two times on Wednesday, at noon from 11:30 to 11:50 and in the evening from 19:00 to 19.30 I hold a little conversation practice unit. Last Wednesday was my first try and I started with the beginners’ class around noon. As always when coming to a new class I had to introduce myself shortly to my new students. But actually I was pleased to recognize a few known faces of people I had met as an assistant teacher in class before. The students were a bit shy but all very friendly and welcoming to me, not only those who already knew me, just like I have gotten used to since I first started assisting in courses here. I used this first unit to practice some pronunciation with them based on the worksheets they got handed out during this day’s lesson. The level of their abilities is as always rather various but I got the positive impression that some of the students who had already attended the course last semester really showed some noticeable improvement. The evening course is of a rather advanced level which made it easier for me to discuss with them and in fact try to explain some sentence structure or word use to the. Similar to the class in the morning I used a worksheet that the teacher Ya Ting was so nice to offer me and with which the students had worked the lesson before. My image of the students was that they were genuinely interested and seriously tried to follow my explanations of different possibilities to use the given sentence structures on the worksheet. I am not sure if everybody fully understood my outlining but they seemed happy to have me try to help them broaden their knowledge of the use of the English language. So I will keep trying to make them converse in and more fully comprehend English in the future.
