Hello again. As a part of introducing the Swiss environmental policy I want to introduce to you, the problem of the wolf in Switzerland.
The wolf
We are talking about the Gray wolf or how he is scientifically called Canis lupus. Originally, the Grey Wolf was the world's most widely distributed mammal, living all around the world in North America, Europe and Asia. According to the IUCN Red List he is regionally extricated in Switzerland. As in other West-European countries and Mexico and most of the USA. Now he returns to the alpine regions. Officially there are 8 wolfs in Switzerland; The WWF has estimated 10 to 15 individuals. This by status 25. Nov. 2008.

The problem
The wolf is hunting other animals such as sheep's, goats, cows and wild alpine animals. This way he is costing the shepherds and the government a lot of money. Because the wolf and other big predators are extinct in Switzerland since the 17th century the herds are unprotected for weeks and a good pray for the wolf. Shocking pictures are used to make politics against the wolf.

The wolf and the law
The gray wolf is a protected animal in Switzerland and hole Europe since the Berner-Convention in 1979. In the Hunting-law there is the following laws about the wolf:
– When the Canton (local government) is paying for the damage caused by the wolf, the federal government will take 80% of the cost.
– The Cantons can authorise the shooting of one wolf, when he causes unacceptable damage.
– The Federal Office for environmental topics has to work out a concept, about protection, shooting, catching, statistical damage and preventive arrangements around the wolf.
– The federal government can support the use of protection dogs or herdsmen financially.
But this law can be understood wrong. Twelve wolfs have been authorised to be shot since the year 2000.
The solution
A possible solution that is already in progress is the protection of the herds with trained protecting dogs or even donkeys. But a lot of farmers still don’t agree with this solution because they can’t left their animals on the mountains alone because the dogs need to be fed.

The future
According to a study of the WWF, 76% of the Swiss population want the wolf to come back to Switzerland. So where is the problem?
On the countryside, the wolf is less popular. In the Swiss parliament, there are 14 currently treated demands to make it easier to shoot the wolf.
So after the autumn session we will know how it goes on with the wolf, the bear and the lynx.
