Every spring the city of Braunschweig in Germany organizes a day to clean up waste that’s lying around the city. The event is divided in two days: Friday, so that schools and kindergardens can participate and Saturday for the general public to join. This year more than 17000 people helped collecting tons of garbage lying on the street in front of their houses, in shopping areas or parks. The event is advertised throughout the city and in busses.
Participants applied at the local waste management company before and received bags and gloves. Each one also got a lottery ticket, which is also valid as a bus ticket for that day and food and drinks discount. Clean up starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m.. They can choose an area they want to clean or ask for one. The filled bags will later be picked up from designated places.
At 1:30 a party was held in the city center with music, foods and drinks, as well as special attractions for children. Whoever was lucky won something in the lottery to take home. The head of a local bank gave a 12.500 euro check to the city mayor to be invested into schools (1 euro for each participating student). Furthermore, one of the schools won a free day in a outdoor swimming pool. |
